I grew up in a small town in rural Ontario with a piano and a large collection of 78 RPM records (Gene Krupa, Tchaikovsky, Spike Jones and Brahms). I was enlisted by our Public School Music Teacher for the Church Choir, starting in the descant section and gradually evolving into a bass. About age 12, I was given a very old, used set of drums and the use of a reel to reel tape recorder.
I was asked to join an old time country band (Rainbow Valley Ramblers) and was soon playing at square dances every weekend.

In 1965 I was invited to play drums in a band with my high school chums, Chapter Six. We used to put on our own dances playing R&B, Rolling Stones, etc. By 1967 the Six had schismed into a trio (Jolly Green Thumb) playing Cream, Hendrix and original music with myself as a singing drummer and co-composer. By 1970, I graduated from Grade 13, and moved out to the Spott Farm. Till ’75 we lived on the farm and played the music we loved (Yes, Genesis, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young). We backed up Perth County Conspiracy and Luke Gibson and were the warm up act for The James Gang, Edward Bear and Ocean, to name a few.

In the summer of ’74, I was invited to PEI by the band Kit Carson for a recording project and chanced to meet Gene McLelland (writer of Snowbird and Put Your Hand in the Hand). Gene got us to back him up at a rare live concert in Charlottetown. I had done recording sessions with Terry Jones and Bob Burchill from The Perth County Conspiracy, so in ’75, when Spott Farm dissolved, I moved my drums to Stratford, Ontario’s Black Swan Coffee House and began playing with everyone who came through there: Brent Titcomb, Beverly Glen Copeland, George Taros and more. In ’77, Cedric Smith approached me to perform on synthesizer, whistles and percussion in the Milton Acorn play Road to Charlottetown, touring Ontario through the winter.
I was musical director for the show during a summer residency at the Confederation Centre in Charlottetown, PEI.

David Woodhead and I were a natural rhythm section on bass, drums and harmonies, for a succession of folk artists. In ’78 we drove to the west coast of Canada to join our fellow Conspirator Paul Gellman, forming the folk/jazz trio
Island, which toured and recorded throughout the Gulf Islands and interior of B.C.

The eighties saw me taking a role as music producer and founder of several original acts, as well as working as a musician for hire in the studio, concerts and theatre. I enrolled in Simon Fraser University’s Interdisciplinary dept. to study composition and electronic music with Martin Bartlett and had opportunities to collaborate with some great creative minds on campus.

The nineties saw reunions and revivals for Perth County Conspiracy; and my first solo release, using MIDI and electronics to augment my sound. It was also a good time for World Music projects, getting involved in African groups, Celtic bands and New Music ensembles.

The new Millenium offered the unique opportunity to travel to the Himalayas in India to study Meditation and engage in sessions and performances with a whole new cast of characters from around the world.

From east coast to west and north of the Arctic Circle, across the USA and abroad in India, I’ve had the great fortune to meet and work with some of the greatest artists of our time.
